About the Master Class

This 3-day master class was aimed at established filmmakers, video artists and animators, interested in extending their practice to mobile platforms. The master class provided an in-depth introduction into the technical and artistic challenges, restrictions and opportunities involved in producing video content for the small and mobile screen.

Through testing and experimentation over the three days of the master class, participants created - and took away - a white paper outlining the pros and cons, limitations and opportunities of mobile video content, covering best practice and multiple encoding techniques.

Because filmmaking is subjective - the director chooses what to leave in and what to leave out, and for what reasons - it is impossible to categorically state what makes best mobile video practice. This is why this master class aims for the participants to discover what works best (for each individual and in each specific situation) through a process of guided trial and error.

Master Class Structure

  • Day 1 Review and critical analysis of existing works
  • Day 2 Experimentation and creation followed by critique
  • Day 3 Production day

Outcomes

  • 10 video artists, animators and filmmakers expertly skilled in the production of movies for mobile phones – both on a technical and conceptual/artistic level
  • More developed artistic mobile community created
  • By adapting existing work and/or creating new work, several participants produced final art pieces by the end of the master class. The intention of this process was to demonstrate good and bad practice. The goal was not to produce a perfect piece of work, but to learn how to make high quality work for the future.
