Wallpaper and video with a twist

Deep Wallpaper is immediately visually engaging and seductive, images sound and video function as decoration for a mobile phone, but that also had some kind of subtle conceptual sting. The work also explores the postage stamp effect in mobile phone imagery whereby condensed visuals of a certain design became more intense, and not less visible, because of their small size. In this work I am proposing that each of four segments are to be modular in character in that they could be played individually or be grouped in various combinations. They could also be played in various formats, on the mobile screen, computer screen or video monitor. Each situation would reveal various aspects of visual density or detail. Each of the segments is to be composed from simple intimate shots of things on the street or around the house. Animated elements are written over these images so that a visual pun is made on a camera process such as zooming in, panning and so on. By exploring the x, y and z coordinates an analysis of the space of the mobile screen is made.

For example zooming in on a subject is contrasted with an overwritten animation that zooms out. This analytic process reveals the physical specificity of the medium. Mark has done the same thing in painting and has often wondered what would be a comparable process in screen work. Ultimately each of the video segments makes a journey from the photographic to the abstract.
